Frequently Asked Questions
Question: I noticed some dark specks in my salt. What is this? Is this normal?
Answer: Due to its natural harvesting process, sea salt can occasionally have small specks throughout. These specks are mineral inclusions from the sea, and in our case, are part of the volcanic bed that the salt is harvested in - hence their black color. They are a safe and natural part of unrefined sea salt and are not a sign of contamination. Colima Salt Co. prides ourselves on being a minimally processed, unrefined sea salt, which means our salt may contain these natural inclusions.
Question: What makes high-quality sea salt different from regular table salt?
Answer: High-quality sea salt is harvested through natural evaporation from seawater and retains essential minerals that are stripped away from table salt during processing. Unlike refined table salt, which is often bleached and treated with anti-caking agents, sea salt is typically free from additives and contains trace minerals like magnesium, calcium, and potassium, which contribute to its richer taste and health benefits.
Question: Why is sea salt healthier than table salt?
Answer: Sea salt is considered healthier because it retains essential minerals that are beneficial for your body. These minerals help maintain hydration, support muscle function, and contribute to overall wellness such as supporting skin health and digestion. Table salt is heavily processed and often stripped of its natural minerals through heating bleaching.
Question: Does Colima Salt Co.'s sea salt contain any heavy metals or contaminants?
Answer: No. Our High Mineral Sea Salt, sourced from the pristine waters of the Cuyutlán lagoon, is third-party tested for purity, and is free from heavy metals and contaminants. Every few months, we test for harmful substances, ensuring a product that is safe to use and free from unwanted contaminants.
Question: Can I substitute sea salt for table salt in recipes?
Answer: Yes! You can and should substitute sea salt for table salt to enjoy improved flavor and health benefits. Because our natural grain sea salt has larger crystals, you may need to adjust the amount used, but it can can use 1:1 by weight. If using our Fine Grind salt, use 1:1 by weight and volume (teaspoons, etc).
Question: What are the health benefits of mineral-rich sea salt?
Answer: Mineral-rich sea salt contains vital minerals like magnesium, calcium, and potassium, which contribute to better hydration, improved nerve and muscle function, and balanced electrolytes. These minerals also support skin health and digestion. Unlike refined salt, the minerals in sea salt are absorbed more easily by the body, offering additional health benefits beyond just seasoning.
Question: How should I store my sea salt to keep it fresh?
Answer: To maintain its freshness, sea salt should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, away from moisture and sunlight. Excess humidity can cause clumping, so avoid storing sea salt in places like near the stove or sink. An airtight jar or container will keep the salt’s texture and flavor intact for longer.
