Our Salt Story
Our story begins like many of yours: wanting to put the highest quality products on our table to boost our well being. Quality sea salt has always been a big part of that, but when studies revealed that leading brands of salts were contaminated with heavy metals and microplastics, we knew we needed to get involved. After countless hours of research, we found that sea salt from Colima, Mexico was exceptionally pure, and also very high in mineral content. Here is our story of salt harvesting from the Aztecs to present day, and what makes Colima Salt Co. a cut above.
Â
Our harvesting methods are deeply rooted in Aztec tradition. The pure geothermal hand-harvested salt is sourced from Cuyutlán Lagoon in Colima, Mexico. Because the salineros (salt farmers) only use the sun and wind to evaporate off the sea water, the harvest season is only 16 weeks long; during the spring months before the summer rains. During the harvest season, the midday high temperature can easily surpass 100 degrees Fahrenheit and quickly dehydrate a tray of salt, making the harvest season short, but effective.
Â
The Cuyutlán Beach and the areas around the Armenia River have a unique type of black volcanic sand, which you will see traces of in real Colima salt. This volcanic sand in the Cuyutlán Lagoon is the first stage of water filtration, removing microplastics and other impurities that are often found in sea salt made from open ocean water sources. As the tray is drying, impurities are skimmed off the top, and as the water level drops further a large broom is used to move the salt crystals around. Once dried out from the sun and wind, it's packaged and sent to us at Colima Salt Co.
